Refood

There are solutions to food waste!

On January 13th, 2026, 9th grade students attended a talk about the work of Refood, led by one of the volunteers from the Vila Franca de Xira branch.

Refood is a Portuguese non-profit organization that fights food waste by collecting superfluous food from restaurants, supermarkets, and other sources, and redistributing it to people in need within the local community. At the same time, it promotes social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and active citizenship.

Did you know?

In Portugal, around 1.9 million tonnes of food are wasted every year β€” about 183 kg per person!

But there are solutions πŸ‘‡

πŸ€ Plan weekly meals
πŸ€ Make a shopping list
πŸ€ Check your fridge before shopping
πŸ€ Buy only what you need
πŸ€ Organize food by expiration date
πŸ€ Use older food first
πŸ€ Reuse leftovers in other meals
πŸ€ Freeze food before it spoils
πŸ€ Serve smaller portions
πŸ€ Use peels and stems in soups or broths
πŸ€ Store food properly
πŸ€ Donate food in good condition
πŸ€ Separate organic waste for composting

Small changes make a big difference β€” for people and for the planet.
