There are solutions to food waste!
On January 13th, 2026, 9th grade students attended a talk about the work of Refood, led by one of the volunteers from the Vila Franca de Xira branch.
Refood is a Portuguese non-profit organization that fights food waste by collecting superfluous food from restaurants, supermarkets, and other sources, and redistributing it to people in need within the local community. At the same time, it promotes social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and active citizenship.
Did you know?
In Portugal, around 1.9 million tonnes of food are wasted every year β about 183 kg per person!
But there are solutions π
π Plan weekly meals
π Make a shopping list
π Check your fridge before shopping
π Buy only what you need
π Organize food by expiration date
π Use older food first
π Reuse leftovers in other meals
π Freeze food before it spoils
π Serve smaller portions
π Use peels and stems in soups or broths
π Store food properly
π Donate food in good condition
π Separate organic waste for composting
Small changes make a big difference β for people and for the planet.
